Apart from acting my only other addiction is working out. My priority with anything concerning
my training is conditioning the most important muscle in my body, my heart. Yes it is a
muscle, a lot of people forgot this fact, if that's you then I'm here to remind you! I have
always had bags of energy especially when I was a child, I was like a little 'buzzlight
year' with the stamina and enthusiasm to power a small country! As a young boy I
participated in many sports including kickboxing, muay thai, karate, boxing,
football/soccer, athletics (sprinter), hockey, badminton and I even tried my hand at
ballet to further enhance my poise and flexibility. I particularly embraced and excelled
at football/soccer and boxing representing several teams and clubs and getting to a
notable level in both sports. My family assumed I'd become a sportsman but that's when
the acting bug got its nasty and vicious claws into me!
I'm no Arnold Schwarzenegger or Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson although I always looked up to
these guys, watching 'shed' loads of their DVD's when I was a youngster and hoping
I could grow some muscles when I grew up! I always loved the physical presence these
guys had, in essence they looked the part, and although I was drawn to character driven
actors when I was a little older I believe I subconsciously wanted a marriage of the two.
On the one hand I wanted to be a character driven actor so I'm able to play the part
authentically and on the other hand to have the physical prowess so that the casting
looks believable to the audience in certain roles. I recall going to the DVD rental shop when
I was a small boy and my Mom would say 'choose a film' and I always chose a film that depicted
a picture with a man with muscles on the DVD cover. When I got older I would choose films
which starred method actors like Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino but as a little boy
it was always flicks with a 'pumped up man mountain' that graced the sleeve, I think I must have
watched too many superhero and He-Man cartoons as a child!
On a personal level I never aspired to be a huge muscle bound 'cat'. Agility, condition, overall
fitness and flexibility has been the key for me and I've always had an idea of aesthetics and
proportion. I aspire for my physique to be akin to a well proportioned sculpture with great lines,
flowing curves and honed detail. I always wanted to look elegant in a suit and then as though
I've been chipped out of stone by Michelangelo once I take the suit off. I've far from accomplished
that goal yet but I'm busting my ass week in week out trying!
I've always trained naturally and embrace a moderately clean diet. I DON'T advocate any faddy
diets or insist on eating elephant dung or drinking tiger urine to keep me pumped and in shape!
I eat plenty of vegetables, seeds, fibre, salad and fruit coupled with protein, mainly chicken, I'm trying to eat more fish but I hate the stuff and it probably hates me and a small amount of
complex carbs, not forgetting a cake or two, errrhhh I mean one cake and only one every now
and again! Some people like to enjoy a few beers or a bottle of wine after work, others may enjoy
a cigarette or play hours of video games. Perhaps that is their vice. For me the vice is a dedication
to working out, it’s both my high and my way of relaxing. Whether to eradicate free radicals or purely for the buzz of pushing myself to the limit, training is my fix that I can’t live without. An interesting fact, is that I love to train to classical music. I still enjoy listening to some dance, metal, rock and some chart music and of course being a mixed race bro maybe, gives away that I enjoy hip hop and R&B but overall classical really 'floats my boat' and bizarrely it helps me push through tough workouts.
Be it drop sets, super sets, core, cardio, heavy weights, light weights, machines, cables, skipping,
boxing, swimming, circuits, hiit training, MMA, TRX, football/soccer or snow boarding. I just love
getting my heart rate up and burning off cake. I may have mentioned this before as I have a high
affection for cake although I do keep an eye on my calorie intake and I eat it in moderation albeit
I wish I could eat more of the stuff, anyone reading this passage who has a cake fetish and has
any spare cakes please feel free to send them to me! Much like the way I choose to live my life,
my workout regime and behaviour are unusual compared to what modern magazines and training gurus depict you should do. I never really have a fixed routine or an agreed number of sets. I like to work both my fast and slow twitch muscle fibres at the same time. For me it’s about training smart and intelligently whilst giving the body the right nutrition and rest it deserves, oh and by the way I advocate everything in terms of diet as long as it's balanced. I realised from a young age that you have to dig deep to achieve things in life as without pain there is no gain. I'm all about being sedulous, committed, passionate and determined both in the gym and in every aspect of my life but can somebody tell me where the nearest cake shop is!
