My experiences have shown me that no other emotions as a human being are as powerful or compelling as love and fear. Whether it's love for a partner, a parent, a pet, a friend, a country, a view, whatever it is for that feeling of love is immense and eternal. I never honestly believe that a true and authentic portrayal of a character can be delivered unless a relative emotional experience can be called upon within the actor. I have refined and enhanced my ability as an actor through a better comprehension of these multi-faceted emotions.
Love and its antithesis fear for me are the basis of all human emotion. The word fear itself to me sounds very sinister and it evokes words such as scared, anxiety, terror, worry, anger, despair, hatred, jealousy, revenge. Whereas love on the other hand encompasses emotions such as desire, affection, intensity, passion, enthusiasm, lust, romance, infatuation, attachment. These two very contrasting feelings and connotations outline to me the avenues myself as an actor should explore within each role I play to deliver convincing and real accounts of any given character. As an actor I seem to be drawn to gritty, intense and emotionally charged characters that have an immense amount of depth. Maybe because of being a method actor I always like portraying characters that are a far distance from my own personal reality.
I appreciate the intoxicating power of love, I have that indestructible bond of love for my Mom which is everlasting and of course I have experienced love in its many forms throughout my various personal relationships. Understanding these two compelling and complex emotions is the basis of copious physical actions. If you can truly tap into this understanding then surely you can not fail to touch every human that witnesses it. Everyone can connect to the pain and ecstasy of love and fear and no story is worth telling without connecting to people.
